What is Malvertising?
Malvertising, or malicious online advertising, is the term used to describe a technique used by Hackers that embed malicious code with legitimate advertisements. These malicious advertisements usually lead to harmful or deceptive content, which directly infects a victim's PC with malware (malicious software). Malware may result in theft of sensitive data such as personal information, banking details or unauthorized access to the victim's PC.
Malvertising provides hackers with an opportunity to infect viewers of high-profile, reputable websites with malware without the need to bypass website security solutions or trick website viewers into clicking on links to external domains. Malicious Ads may targets specific demographics or geographical regions. Once introduced into the advertising network ecosystem these malicious ads frequently go undiscovered are traded, bought and sold throughout the ad networks, making discovery and tracking of an Malvertising incident very difficult.
